Does the Bible forbid blood transfusion?
JWs teach that receiving blood transfusion is wrong and the logic goes like this:
IV transfusion is the same as eating.
The Bible says that we are not to eat blood.
Therefore, the Bible teaches that we must not have a blood transfusion.
The Bible teaches that we must not eat blood.
Gen 9:4 Only flesh with its life—its blood—you must not eat.
Lev 7:26-27 “‘You must not eat any blood in any of your dwelling places, whether that of birds or that of animals. Anyone who eats any blood must be cut off from his people.’”
JWs teach that intravenous (IV) blood transfusion is the same as eating because people can receive nutrients from intravenous drips and the medical record records that the patient is “fed” with an IV.
However, while an IV may be similar to eating, a blood transfusion is not similar to eating. Receiving nutrients from blood cannot be something forbidden by God because if that is so, we would all have violated that. This is because when we were a fetus, we received nutrients through the blood from our mother.
Through the blood vessels in the umbilical cord, the fetus receives all the necessary nutrition, oxygen, and life support from the mother through the placenta. (Source: https://www.chop.edu/conditions-diseases/blood-circulation-fetus-and-newborn)
